For those still telecommuting, It’s no news that working from home creates a new way of accessing confidential data and poses a greater risk of the data’s security being breached. If a breach happens, it can be difficult to identify how and when it happened.
It’s every employee’s responsibility to follow precautionary measures. Below are some steps we can take:
1 – Maintain confidentiality: Treat data as you would in the office (Confidential). Always lock your device if you will leave it unattended. Irrespective of who is in the house. Remember kids are meddlesome. lol.
2 – Set secure passwords: Your device and files that contain sensitive data should be protected by strong passwords and use 2-factor authentication where possible.
3 – Encrypt your device and documents: Convert data and information into code to prevent unauthorized access. It doesn’t prevent a potential hacker gaining access, but if they do, all they can see is ciphertext which is of no use to a hacker.
4 – Make sure your security software (firewalls, antivirus..) are up to date.
5 – Keep hard copies of sensitive information also safe – Documents should be kept where there is low possibility of people accessing them.
Thoughts? How are you protecting yours?
